Continuing Education Discusses Legal Penalties for Suicide

The Alamein Center for Continuing Education at the Alamein Institute for Graduate Studies in Najaf held a dialogue seminar entitled "Criminal Responsibility for Incitement to Suicide: The Sacrifice as a Model" on Monday, September 22, 2025. Prof. Dr. Zaid Mohsen Al-Agili, Dean of the Institute, said, "We believe that this seminar is one of the most important forums that addresses what is called the sacrifice and its negative effects on society, especially cases of suicide, and the guest did a good job in what he presented." Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Al Ramahi - Director of Continuing Education: "The discussion about suicide and what is called sacrifice is important to raise awareness among our children to protect them from being affected by these negative situations. Dr. Karar Al Sayegh - Rapporteur of the Public Law Department - pointed out that "suicide is one of the most dangerous negative phenomena that have invaded modern societies, and it has increased significantly in recent decades with the complexity of social, economic and psychological conditions." Al Sayegh explained, "Socially, suicide has serious repercussions on the family and society, as it plants despair and loss of confidence in people, and sets a negative example that may push others to imitate it." Al Sayegh explained, "Field studies indicate that most suicides are between the ages of 20 and 40, which is the most important age group in construction and production, making the phenomenon a double loss to society." Al Sayegh explained, "Anyone who incites or assists a person in any way to commit suicide shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not exceeding seven years if the suicide is committed as a result." Al Sayegh concluded, "The seriousness of the phenomenon is highlighted by its prevalence among young people, and sometimes it is disguised as a 'sacrifice'." To mislead them, which calls for integrated legal, intellectual, and social efforts to confront this phenomenon and protect society from its effects." The center continues to hold seminars and workshops to raise awareness among members of society and provide academic opportunities for graduate students.
